Microsoft Europe was looking at search for a solution to a desktop research platform for the Building the Future of the Schools project. While just about everyone is familiar with the concept of search and results, it doesn’t have to end there, with a page full of result links. The results can be used like objects, reconfigured and reworked to dozens of different views.

After the initial user research and defining and setting out the structure of the research platform, I was brought in to help flesh out how it would look and function to the user. The results are a number of graphical interfaces (and eventually a prototype that was built in Silverlight) showing the power of search when its really utilised. The researcher, in this case working with flood date defense data, can save and build result sets by person or feed, and then show the results on a map, over time or in relational views.
